The SpAA Lab -Speech Accommodation to Acoustics brings together brings together faculty and students interested in Speech Intelligibility, Room Acoustics and Musical Acoustics as well as in voice production and perception. The long-term goal of our research is to discover acoustical conditions in classrooms that minimize teachers’ vocal effort preserving high speech intelligibility for pupils. Our research concerns classroom acoustic for enhancing students’ understanding, effect of room acoustics on vocal effort and fatigue, and vocal health in teacher and singers.
Location and Facilities. We are housed in the Speech and Hearing Science Building at 901 S. Sixth Street, Champaign, IL 61820. Our resources include a lab (B24) where our equipment is located and a single-walled Whispering Room (B34) (interior dimensions: 226 × 287 cm and h = 203 cm).
Equipment. Our equipment includes Head and Torso Simulator (HATS), BAS006 Impulsive Sound Source (Clapper), calibrators, recorders TASCAM DR-44WL, Closed Back Headphone: Tascam TH-03, Studio monitoring headphones: Shure SRH840, Open headphones: HD600, Sound Level meter/Microphone: Ling WAVES IEC 651, Microphone: MA220, NTi Audio.
